AM welcomes Assembly Government commitment to broadcasting

Plaid Cymru Assembly Member, Bethan Jenkins, who sits on the Assembly’s Communities and Culture Committee has today (29/7/09) welcomed the response of the Assembly Government to recommendations by the committee on public service broadcasting in Wales.

Ms Jenkins who is Plaid’s Culture spokesperson in the National Assembly also welcomed the appointment of Professor Ian Hargreaves as head of the review into the creative industries in Wales.

Speaking today, Ms Jenkins, said:

“I am very pleased that the Assembly Government has accepted most of the recommendations of the committee. I am particularly pleased that the Assembly Government will continue to press for a plurality in English language broadcasting from the UK Government so that top-quality English language broadcasting is available.

“The Assembly Government’s renewed commitment on Welsh language journalism is also to be welcomed as is the commitment to enhance community-based initiatives such as community radio stations.”

On the appointment of Professor Ian Hargreaves, Ms Jenkins added:

“Professor Hargreaves will be heading an important review into how Wales can take full advantage of the opportunities presented by the creative industries and the role the Assembly Government can play in fully maximising those opportunities. I wish him well in his new role.”
